*** *** Readme file for the Adaptoid Configurator ver 1.3.175 (beta). *** 1. Installation Instructions ---------------------------- Run the adc_13175b.exe setup program. Click "next" a few times. By default, the Adaptoid Configurator will be stored in C:\Program Files\Adaptoid, and the drivers will be placed in a subdirectory named "driver". An "Adaptoid" folder will be added to the "Programs" folder in your start menu, and an icon to start the configurator will be placed in there. The Adaptoid Configurator requires version 1.3.175 of the Adaptoid drivers, which are copied to your hard drive as part of the setup operation. At this time, the driver installation is not integrated into the setup process and must be run as a separate step. To install the drivers after installing the Configurator software, you can launch the driver installer from the File menu in the configurator. Once the driver installer comes up, simply click on the "Install" button and it will install the drivers. Plug in the Adaptoid AFTER you click the "Install" button to avoid having the "Add New Device Wizard" screen pop up. But if you already have your Adaptoid plugged in it will install that way just as well. If you ever get the "Add New Device Wizard", just cancel it. To uninstall the Adaptoid software, first run the driver installer to uninstall the drivers. Then unload the Adaptoid Configurator program by right-clicking on the icon in the task bar tray and select "Unload Keymapper". The icon should go away. Then go to control panel's add/remove programs and remove the Adaptoid configurator software from there. Your configuration scripts will be left in the C:\Program Files\Adaptoid folder and must be manually deleted, or you can keep them there for when you re-install the configurator. 2. Features ----------- The Adaptoid configurator allows you to set up configurations for the Keymapper, which allows the N64 controller to produce keypresses, mouse clicks or mouse movements in addition to the normal joystick button presses and stick movements. Using the configurator you can assign whichever keyboard keys you like to the controller's buttons. These can be single keys like "A" or "ESCAPE", or can be key combinations such as "ALT-B" or "CTRL-SHIFT-F5". In addition to assigning keys, the configurator will allow you to assign mouse clicks to a controller button so that pressing the button has the same effect as clicking the mouse. For the analog stick on the N64 controller, the configurator has a variety of settings you can apply. You can set the sensitivity, flip the Y axis, tweak the range to reach the inaccessable corner positions. You can cause analog stick movement to either move the joystick or move the mouse pointer. There is even a special "smoothing" adjustment to improve accuracy when using the controller as a mouse. If you have multiple Adaptoids, different settings can be applied to each device, and they can all be used simultaneously. That means you can assign different keyboard keys to each controller and use them multiplayer. Configurations are stored in "script" files, and you can create as many different configurations as you'd like. You can assign a different configuration to each controller, or you can assign one configuration to mutiple controllers. You can assign a script file to a particular game and have it activate when the game is started, or you can use the configurator to launch the game for you. The configurator places a small controller icon on in the tray on the taskbar. This icon shows the status of the keymapper by changing colors depending on what is going on. It shows different colors when no Adaptoids are plugged in, when it has activated a configuration for a game, or when it is sitting idle waiting for a game to start. This icon can be double clicked at any time to bring up the configurator. For the programmer types out there, the keymapper has a lot to offer. This is due to the fact that the "scripts" are very similar to C source files, and can be customized to produce an infinite variety of effects. Setting buttons as shift buttons, range zooming, or key sequencing are all possible, as well as many other things that we haven't even thought of yet. 3. Limitations -------------- This version of the Configurator is still beta software. It hasn't had a lot of testing. We're still finishing up the documentation, so online help is not available yet. The mouse emulation needs improvement as it produces absolute position coordinates which are fine for cursor-type use but many FPS type games can't understand. And there's many additional features which we're working on but are not completed yet. But since many of you are eager for at least the basic keymapping functionality, we didn't want to hold up a release any longer. So here it is, enjoy. Thank you to all our customers for your support! If you have any problems with the software, please let us know. Or if there's any ideas of new features you're interested in, please let us know as well. We're always interested in your suggestions! 4. Driver Changes ----------------- The driver which comes with the Configurator is the 1.2.78 driver, modified to accomodate the Keymapper. The only other difference between this driver and the 1.2.78 driver is that the Mempack folder icon has been moved from the Desktop to the "My Computers" folder (at the request of many). 5.
